Army Corps to Hold Public Meeting for Indiana Harbor Dredging Plan

Published March 13, 2015

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Indiana Harbor and Canal (IHC) dredging contractors, Kokosing Construction Co. and O'Brien & Gere, will hold a public meeting March 18, 2015, to present the IHC 2015 dredging schedule and activities.

WHEN: Wednesday, March 18, 2015

WHERE:  City Hall, Annex Building, 4444 Railroad Avenue, East Chicago, Ind. 46312

TIME:  6 - 8 p.m.

Dredging first began in the fall of 2012 and to date the Contractor has removed approximately 600,000 cubic yards of material. The Contractor is scheduled to return to the site in the spring of 2015.

Portions of the federal channel will be dredged to achieve the congressionally-authorized navigation depths. Sediments in adjacent berthing and docking areas will be removed at the request of local industry and local sponsor, the East Chicago Waterway Management District.

After backlog dredging is complete, maintenance dredging will take place, as necessary, over a period of approximately 20 years, to remove re-accumulated sediments and maintain navigable depths in the waterway.

Air monitoring results at the CDF are available in real time, and additional project information is available at the dredging air monitoring data website http://www.indianaharbordredge.com and the Indiana Harbor project website http://www.lrc.usace.army.mil/Missions/CivilWorksProjects/IndianaHarbor.aspx.
