Today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Hammond Sanitary District, and Rep. Peter Visclosky (IN-1) marked the completion of the Hammond sewer improvement project with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

"Partnerships are key to successfully completing projects like this," Commander Col. Christopher Drew said. "And we couldn’t have completed this project on time and under budget without Congressman Visclosky and our partners -- the Hammond Sanitary District and Grimmer Construction."

A replacement 24-foot force main was installed in Hammond for the Hammond Sanitary District. The section replaced was approximately 2,000 feet long and runs along Atchison Avenue. In addition, an existing water main was moved, and sidewalk and street repair was required following the utility work. Construction activities were completed on May 28, 2014, on time and under budget. The contractor was Grimmer Construction of Highland, Ind.

"The City of Hammond would like to thank Congressman Visclosky, his staff and the Army Corps of Engineers for their assistance in funding and bidding this portion of the Robertsdale force main replacement project," Stan Dostatni, president, Hammond Sanitary District, Board of Commissioners, said.

This project was authorized under Section 219 of the Water Resource Development Act which allows the Corps to assist local governments in planning, designing, and constructing water-related projects. Projects under this authority are cost shared at 75 percent federal and 25 percent nonfederal. This project is part of the Calumet Region Environmental Infrastructure Section 219 project authority, and has been allocated $1,200,000 of federal funding. The local sponsor, Hammond Sanitary District, provided $392,000.

"I thank the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the city of Hammond, and the Hammond Sanitary District for partnering their efforts in order to bring this project to fruition," said Congressman Visclosky. "The residents of Hammond will be well served by these infrastructure improvements, improvements that when included within the full scope of the investments being made within the city, will lead to an improved quality of life."
