Today the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rep. Pete Visclosky (IN-1), Mayor David Uran, and City of Crown Point officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of a sewer improvement project in Crown Point, Ind.

The project involved lining approximately 1,600 linear feet of existing sanitary sewer lines. The work was done in utility right-of-way and easement locations across Crown Point. In addition, manholes in these areas were inspected, relined and repaired as needed.

“Partnerships are the key to successfully completing projects like this. Working together we have been able to help improve the quality of life of area residents,” Lt. Col. Jason Borg, deputy commander, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District, said.

The project will help reduce potential groundwater pollution from the leaking sanitary sewer system, and a reduce cases of sanitary sewer backups into residences and treatment plant bypasses.

"The City of Crown Point appreciates the continued support of Congressman Pete Visclosky and the Army Corps of Engineers for helping improve our community's public infrastructure,” Crown Point Mayor David Uran said. “This project will help homes in Briarwood subdivision with decades of rain event issues.  We are committed to protecting property values and quality of life projects."

“I thank the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Mayor Uran and his Crown Point administration for seeing this invaluable investment through to fruition,” Rep. Visclosky said. “Your dedication to investing in our economic infrastructure is improving the lives for not just individuals living and working here in Crown Point, but for individuals throughout Northwest Indiana.”

This project, authorized under Section 219 of the Water Resources Development Act, is cost shared at 75 percent federal and 25 percent nonfederal. This project received $750,000 in federal funding. The local sponsor is the City of Crown Point who contributed $242,000 in local match.

Engineering design was performed by Commonwealth Engineers, Inc. and a contract was awarded to Industrial & Environmental Services of Gary, Ind., on Sept. 30, 2015, for $ 781,156. Field construction work started in April 2016 and ended on Aug. 29, 2016.
