    Welcome to the
    First Annual Information Session
    to Discuss
New and Emerging Technology in the Fields of Removal, Transportation, Disposal and Treatment of Contaminated Sediments

    Indiana Harbor and Canal
    Dredging and Disposal Activities
    4-7 p.m., Monday, April 30, 2001
Riley Social Center, 1005 E. Chicago Avenue, East Chicago, IN

Dredge and dispose of contaminated Indiana Harbor and Canal sediment in a manner that is:
    · safe to human health
    · improves the environment, and
    · is economically beneficial

What to Expect from Today's Session
An opportunity for factual information exchange; not a decision-making meeting.  Information available, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and East Chicago Waterway Management District staff available for one-on-one discussion.  The goal is to be open-minded, respectful, fair, willing to listen.

Definition of "New and Emerging Technology"
    Technologies that:
    (1) Have only recently come to our attention and therefore were not discussed in the Comprehensive Management Plan and Final Environmental Impact Statement dated January 1999, or
    (2) Were discussed in the January 1999 document, but where significantly more efforts have been made in developing the technology since that time.

    Tables

    1. SIGN-IN AND WELCOME TABLE - Comment sheets available here

    2. GENERAL PROJECT INFORMATION

    3. TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY - None are currently considered to be applicable to Indiana Harbor and Canal sediment due to the types and levels of contamination. However the Corps and USEPA are researching biological treatment methods on sediment at other Great Lakes sites.  At a minimum there may be an opportunity for on-site research after dredging is initiated at the Indiana Harbor CDF.

    · Incineration-type
    · Extraction-type
    · Chemical oxidation or reduction
    · Biological - Bioremediation, Phytoremediation
    · Wastewater treatment during Eddy pump demonstration - see Table 4

    4. REMOVAL, TRANSPORT AND DISPOSAL TECHNOLOGY - Eddy Pump Dredging Demonstration

    · Eddy pump dredging is a type of innovative hydraulic dredging method, similar to a vacuum cleaner, that entrains less water than conventional hydraulic dredging in the pipeline in the process of removing and transporting sediment.

    · Dredging, transport via a one-mile long 10-inch diameter pipeline, confinement of sediment, and treatment of wastewater at Ispat-Inland was completed in September 2000, with on-going monitoring for approximately one year.
