Description:  The construction and improvement of Burns Waterway Small Boat Harbor was authorized in 1960. The harbor is protected by a 1,043 feet long rubblemound breakwater to the west and a 678 feet long rubblemound breakwater to the north. The project also includes an 11 feet deep by 150 feet wide entrance channel, a 10 feet deep outer harbor basin and a 6 feet deep by 5,540 feet long navigation channel that extends inland from the outer harbor basin to the Portage Marina. The width of 6 feet deep channel varies from 100 feet at the outer harbor basin to 65 feet beginning at first private bridge located about 3,500 feet south of the outer harbor basin. Burns Waterway Small Boat Harbor is primarily a harbor of refuge providing access to several recreational docks and a small commercial charter fishing industry. This project last dredged during the summer of 2000.

Navigation Depths:  The above depths are the authorized navigation depths for the project and are referenced to Low Water Datum 1985. The actual navigation depths may vary due to fluctuations in the level of Lake Michigan and the occurrence of shoaling within the navigation channel. This project was last surveyed in the summer of 2003. Click here to view survey.  Paper copies of this survey can also be obtained by contacting the:
