Description: The construction and improvement
of Indiana Harbor was authorized by the River and Harbor Act of 1913.
The project, as it exists today, consists of a 2,324 feet long concrete
capped breakwater with a 201 feet long rubblemound extension to the east
and a 1,120 feet long rubblemound breakwater to the north. The project
also includes (a) 29 feet deep by 800 feet wide lake approach channel,
(b) 28 feet deep anchorage and maneuvering basin, (c) 27 feet deep by
280 feet wide harbor entrance channel, (d) 22 feet deep canal channel
and (e) two 22 feet deep branch channels. The principle commodities transported
on this project consist of iron ore, limestone, steel, petroleum products
and miscellaneous bulk products.
Navigation Depths: The above depths are the authorized
navigation depths for the project and are referenced to Low Water Datum
1985. The actual navigation depths may vary due to fluctuations in the
level of Lake Michigan and the occurrence of shoaling within the navigation
channel. This project was last surveyed in August 2000. Copies of this
