Project Description:

Horner Park lies along the North Branch of the Chicago River in the City of Chicago, Illinois. The restoration area is bound by Montrose Avenue to the North, the Chicago River to the East, Irving Park Road to the South and Horner Park to the West. The slope of the bank varies from being almost vertical in many areas, to more gently sloping at the southern-most part of the site. The project site encompasses approximately 800 feet of the riverbank and approximately 300 feet inland from the top of banks to an existing sidewalk. The project site is about 10 acres. The goal of this project is to restore the natural features of the North Branch Chicago River at Horner Park and its riparian zone within the constraints of the current system. The objectives of this project include: 1) restoring stream form and natural habitat, 2) restoring native emergent wetland ecosystem, and 3) restoring native oak savanna ecosystem.

Total Project Cost:   $ 1,500,000
Federal Cost:   $ 1,075,000
Non-Federal Cost:   $ 425,000

Current Status:

This project is now in feasibility stage with completion scheduled for 2012 and construction scheduled for 2013.
