EAST CHICAGO, Ind. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Indiana Harbor and Canal (IHC) dredging contractors, Kokosing Construction Co. and O'Brien & Gere, will hold a public meeting March 13, 2014, to present the IHC 2014 dredging schedule and activities.

WHEN:           Thursday, March 13, 2014

WHERE:         East Chicago City Hall

                      4525 Indianapolis Blvd. (2nd floor)

                      East Chicago, Ind. 46312

TIME:               5 - 8 p.m.

Dredging began in 2012 at IHC confined disposal facility (CDF) for the first time since 1972, with the contractor dredging approximately 400,000 cubic yards of material. Dredging will resume in the spring of 2014.

Portions of the federal channel will be dredged to achieve the congressionally-authorized navigation depths. Sediments in adjacent berthing and docking areas will be removed at the request of local industry and local sponsor, the East Chicago Waterway Management District.

After backlog dredging is complete, maintenance dredging will take place, as necessary, over a period of approximately 20 years, to remove re-accumulated sediments and maintain navigable depths in the waterway.

Air monitoring results at the CDF are available in real time, and additional project information is available at the dredging air monitoring data website http://www.indianaharbordredge.com and the Indiana Harbor project website http://www.lrc.usace.army.mil/Missions/CivilWorksProjects/IndianaHarbor.aspx.
