    First-of-its-kind agreement signed by USACE and MWRD to complete vital infrastructure project

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Chicago District signed a project partnership agreement allowing the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago to receive $33.8 million in federal funds Jan. 31.

    This project involves restoring approximately 68 acres of habitat including coastal dunes, oak savanna, oak woodland, and naturalizing streambank. The Portage Park study area is part of the Lake Michigan coastline, located in Porter County in northwestern Indiana.  
The Portage Park feasibility study was approved in August 2012, and the project partnership agreement was signed in May 2013. A five-year construction contract was awarded in September 2014, with a spring 2015 construction start.

    Chicago District restoration efforts along Lake Michigan total 10 projects, 580 acres

    The Chicago District currently has 32 ecosystem restoration projects recently completed or under construction within its footprint of six counties in Illinois and three in northwest Indiana. These projects have protected or restored over 4100acres of habitat, providing substantial benefits to wildlife and improving the quality of life through compatible recreation such as wildlife watching and hunting for the region’s 9.4 million residents.

    Over 225 residents attend Rio Guayanilla, Puerto Rico public meeting

    More than 225 people attended a public scoping meeting in Puerto Rico Nov. 28, 2018, for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Rio Guayanilla feasibility study. The meeting, hosted by the USACE Chicago District, was held in collaboration with the Corps’ Jacksonville District, the study's nonfederal sponsor; the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, and the Town of Guayanilla.

    Corps partners with Orange County on study to reduce flood risk, receive public input

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Chicago and Los Angeles District, in partnership with Orange County Public Works, are collaborating on the Westminster/East Garden Grove Flood Risk Management Study - a proposed project to reduce flood risk.
