    Hennepin Canal

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District, conducted a Lunch and Learn on the Hennepin Canal on October 21 to honor the 115th anniversary of its opening. It was led by Senior Geologist, Tim Flaherty who spent his own time throughout the years conducting research on this historically significant project.

    Yesterday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Chicago District, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan (IN-1), and Crown Point Mayor Peter Land marked the completion of a Crown Point Sanitary and Sewer Infrastructure Improvement Project.

    Algoma Intrepid visits Manitowoc Harbor

    The largest vessel in the last 20 years visited Manitowoc Harbor in late April. The Algoma Intrepid a 650-foot bulk freighter brought grain into the harbor to deliver to Briess Malt. Reestablishing the ability to bring in raw materials through the harbor allows Briess to meet the growing demand for craft beer and food.
  • Nine dams and a thousandth of an inch

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Chicago District operates nine dams along the Lower Fox River as it flows from Lake Winnebago to Lake Michigan. Balancing the needs of all the stakeholders along the river as well as four privately owned dams the Corps of Engineers can still manage to control the level of Lake Winnebago to a thousandth of an inch.

    Chicago Harbor Lock and Dam welcomes back Ellie

    The Chicago District was proud to welcome back Ellie to her fifth season of protecting the Chicago Harbor Lock and Dam. Ellie is an 8 year old Border Collie, known as the Bird Disbursal Specialist, she divides her time between USACE’s Chicago Harbor Lock and Dam in Chicago, Illinois and Robert S. Kerr Lock and Dam 15 in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. She stays at the property 24 hours a day, and is a diligent, good-natured companion to the staff. Ask any of her coworkers and they will tell you that this arrangement has been the very best - Five seasons and still going strong.

    Division engineer visits Chicago District to meet with stakeholders, tour project sites

    Col. Kimberly Peeples, commander of the Great Lakes & Ohio River Division (LRD), visited the Chicago District for the first time last week, one of seven districts under LRD. The three-day itinerary included meetings with stakeholders, briefings at several project sites, and recognition of several district team members. Peeples assumed command of LRD on June 11, 2021.

    USACE Chicago District bids farewell as Wozniak retires after 30 years of federal service

    Thirty years ago, Keith Wozniak, biologist, began his government career at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District’s Regulatory Functions Branch conducting permit application reviews, and compliance and enforcement actions. This month, he retired from the district as the chief of the Regulatory Branch.
