 Stage V

Stage V extends North and South from North Cote to Kennedy:

  • Phase 1 –S Levee Indianapolis to Conrail Rail Road (Complete)
  • Phase 2 –Remainder of N & S Levees/Floodwalls, Northcote to Kennedy

Stage Description:

Phase 1
This project includes a 2500 lineal feet of compacted clay levee embankment, three reinforced concrete culverts, pump station work, and utility relocation. This segment of the West Reach Levee System spans the abandoned Erie-Lackawanna Railroad to the Conrail Railroad on the south side of the Little Calumet River.

Phase 2
This project consist of approx. 11,755 ft of earthen levee; 360 ft of sheet pile wall; 3,520 ft of floodwall; 810 ft of utility corridor floodwall (option item); two railroad closure structures; 1,600 ft access ramps; 1-270 ft span, one 140 ft span and one 232 ft span pedestrian bridges (option items); 2,100 ft of ditches; 360 ft of drains; one flood control structure constructed in the channel; gatewell structures; outlet improvements; and riprap for erosion control, recreation trail, and other work items identified in the bid schedule. The project is located between the abandoned Erie-Lackawanna Railroad to Kennedy Avenue on the north side of the Little Calumet River and on the south side of the Little Calumet River, from Northcote Avenue to the abandoned Erie Railroad and from Conrail Railroad to Kennedy Avenue.

Stage Status:

Phase 1
The Corp of Engineers performed final inspection June, 1995. Based on the inspection, it was determined that the work was substantially complete.

Phase 2
The Corp of Engineers awarded Stage V-2 construction contract to Dyer Construction on 29 September 2007. Dyer Construction acknowledged Notice to Proceed on 17 October 2007. The contract completion date is expected to be extended into summer 2010 because of changed conditions and adverse weather experienced by the Contractor. As of October 2009, the Contractor has completed much of the required flood control structures and continues to work towards contract completion..

 Stage VI
  • Phase 1 - N Levee/Floodwall Cline to Kennedy & S Levee/Floodwall Kennedy to Liable (Complete)
  • Phase 2 - S Levee/Floodwall Liable to Cline

Stage Description:

Stage VI-1, North
This project consists of 6000 lineal feet of compacted clay levee embankment, 4,000 lineal feet of steel sheetpile floodwall, excavations, 3 gatewell structures, culverts and sewer appurtenances, riprap, gravel access roads, preload embankments, traffic restrains, tree planting and seeding. This project is located between the Kennedy Avenue to Cline on the north side of the Little Calumet River.

Stage VI-1, South
This project consists of 6400 lineal feet of compacted clay levee embankment, 260 feet of reinforce concrete I-wall, 2000 feet of sheet pile floodwall, a sandbag closure structures, two reinforced concrete culverts, work on three pumping stations, a 100 acre natural ponding area, a recreation trail, relocation of utilities, and five duck boxes. This project is located between Kennedy Avenue and Cline on the south side of the Little Calumet River.

Stage VI-2
This project consist of 8,250 lineal feet of earthen levee, 1,600 LF of steel sheet pile floodwall, excavations, 3 gate well structures, culverts and sewer appurtenances, gravel access roads, traffic restraints, asphalt removal, tree planting and seeding. This project is located between Liable and Cline Avenue.

Stage Status:

Stage VI-1, North
Stage VI-1, North, status as of October 2009. This project is on the north side of the Little Calumet River between Kennedy Avenue and Cline Avenue. All Work has been completed

Stage VI-1, South
Stage IV-1, South, status as of October 2009. This project is on the south side of the Little Calumet River between Liable Road and Kennedy Avenue. All work has been completed.

Stage VI-2
Stage IV- Phase 2, status as of October 2009. This project is on the south side of the Little Calumet River between Liable Road and Cline Avenue. All work has been completed.
