Abou-El-Seoud selected as senior economist for USACE Great Lakes and Ohio River Division

Dena Abou-El-Seoud, economist in the USACE Chicago District’s Planning Branch, has been selected to become the senior economist at the Great Lakes & Ohio River Division’s (LRD) Planning and Policy Division. With yesterday as her official start day, she will be a virtual employee and Chicago District will continue to be her home base. The Chicago District is one of seven districts under LRD.

Chartouni named USACE Cost Engineer of Year

George Chartouni, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Chicago District, was awarded the USACE Cost Engineer of the Year award at a virtual national awards ceremony on Nov. 12, 2020, hosted by Lt. Gen. Scott A. Spellmon, 55th Chief of Engineers and Commanding General.

USACE Chicago District completes record-breaking fiscal year with $241M program

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Chicago District closed out fiscal year 2020 with a record-breaking $241M program. A significant contribution to the spike in execution was $137M from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the district’s support to the COVID-19 pandemic response.

USACE enforcement actions can result in fines, permanent protection of natural areas

Have you ever wondered what happens to money the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District collects in fines for wetlands violations, and how it obtains those fines in the first place? The Chicago District regulates certain activities conducted in waterways and wetlands located within Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, McHenry and Will counties in northeastern Illinois, as well as Lake, Porter and a portion of LaPorte counties in northwestern Indiana. And part of the Corps' regulatory responsibility involves ensuring that permittees comply with issued permits (i.e. compliance), as well as ensuring that unauthorized activities do not take place in jurisdictional areas (i.e. enforcement).

National Recreation and Parks Month - USACE Chicago District highlights its three recreation areas

This month we celebrate National Recreation and Parks Month. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is one of the nation's leading federal providers of outdoor recreation with more than 400 lake and river projects in 43 states. Visitors of all ages can enjoy traditional activities like hiking, boating, fishing, camping, and hunting. Ninety percent of the Corps’ recreation areas are located within 50 miles of a major metropolitan center.
